YCbCr signals (prior to scaling and offsets to place the signals into digital form) are called YPbPr, and are created from the corresponding gamma-adjusted RGB (red, green and blue) source using two defined constants Kb and Kr as follows:
This form of YCbCr is used primarily for older standard-definition television systems, as it uses an RGB model that fits the phosphor emission characteristics of older CRTs.
Since the equations defining YCbCr are formed in a way that rotates the entire nominal RGB color cube and scales it to fit within a (larger) YCbCr color cube, there are some points within the YCbCr color cube that cannot be represented in the corresponding RGB domain (at least not within the nominal RGB range).

RFC 4175 (rfc4175) - RTP Payload Format for Uncompressed Video
In the case of YCbCr components, the Cb and Cr components are horizontally sub-sampled by a factor of two (4:2:2 color encoding).
If YCbCr format data is being transported, this is the pixel offset of the luminance sample; if RGB format data is being transported, it is the pixel offset of the red sample; if BGR format data is being transported, it is the pixel offset of the blue sample.
For YCbCr 4:1:1 format video, the Cb and Cr components are horizontally sub-sampled by a factor of four (each Cb and Cr sample corresponds to four Y components).

YCbCr data range of 16-235 (240 for Cb and Cr), where 16 is fl and 235/240 is white.
YCbCr (4:2:2) is 8-bit and YCbCr (4:4:4) is 10-bit which means there is more information stored to represent the brightness and color values of the pixel and that creates a better looking picture.
The letters, RGB and YCbCr (or YPbPr), represent the type of data recorded, while the three numbers,4:4:4 and 4:2:2, represent how detailed the data is sampled.

Determining the best Color Space for compression   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-11-04)
This experiment also shows that the distorion of YCbCr images is smaller than the visual effect of subsamping in the Lab color space.
For example in a color space in which the interchannel cross correlation is high, information will be coded redundantly and and this will lead to lower compression ratios.
Comparisons between YCbCr and other color spaces that take into account these criterions can be found in [3].

In this implementation, fast parallel VMF implementation is evaluated in YCbCr color spcace on a 4,096 node SIMD array.
In this way, VMF can be implemented in YCbCr color space that perfectly separates the intensity and color information and allows more flexible processing of luminance data independent of chrominance.

HDTV Magazine - HDTV Forum - View topic - HDMI - video levels and color space
YCbCr is based on DVI-video for video content and uses a video, Y, range of 16-235 and a color, Cb and Cr, range of 16-240.
When HDMI uses the expected YCbCr encoding it must also use the correct color space based on whether the source is HD, ITU Rec.
In this case the HDMI source is supposed to detect this fact and provide RGB encoding from the native YCbCr that is provided on a DVD movie for DVI since DVI is for the most part RGB for displays.

 YCbCr 4:2:0 - MultimediaWiki
YCbCr 4:2:0 indicates a planar YCbCr colorspace where a 2x2 block of pixels in an image is represented by 4 Y samples, 1 for each pixel, but all 4 pixels share a Cb sample and a Cr sample.
YCbCr 4:2:0 can be transported within a general purpose container format.
When the data is designated with a FourCC of I420 all of the Y data appears first, followed by the Cb data, then then Cr data.

The VMR7/9 being referred to are the DirectShow Video Mixing Renderers, which are filters that render final video on the screen in a player like Windows Media Player.
YCbCr data, which is frequently 8 bits per channel, nominally has a range of 16-235 for the luminance (Y) channel, where 16 represents fl and 235 represents white.
This is sometimes a point of confusion because JPEG JFIF specifies a slightly different encoding where YCbCr values are encoded with the full 0-255 range; mixing these up causes contrast shifts in the video.
