In my brief experience of working with the YM2612, I've come to the conclusion that the problems with sound in emulators are often due to extremely small timing inaccuracies with the writes to the chip.
Since Gens queues YM2612 writes for each scanline and then writes them in a block at the end, it is messing with the timing quite a lot.
It's the instruments themselves, like the guitar in TF4, which I'm interested in, I believe it is the minute interactions of the operators which changes the type of sound, and the exact time which they are programmed does not make a difference.

  Yamaha YM2612 - Definition, explanation
YM2612 is a 6 channel FM synthesis (Frequency Modulation) sound synthesizer IC produced by Yamaha.
It belongs to a family of Yamaha FM synthesizer chips, and can be considered an ancestor to the OPL2 (YM3812) and OPL3 (YMF262) FM ICs that were used in the popular AdLib and Creative Labs SoundBlaster PC soundcards.
The YM2612 does not provide any timing or buffering of the PCM samples, so all frequency control and buffering must be done in software by the host processor.

Below are the YM2612 register equivallents to each byte in a voice.
For volume, the max volume on the DX/TX series is equal to the max volume on the YM2612.

  Qwika - Yamaha YM2612
YM2612, aka OPN2, is a six-channel sound synthesizer IC, or sound chip, produced by Yamaha.
It belongs to a family of sound synthesizer chips produced by Yamaha that uses 'FM', or Frequency modulation synthesis to generate sounds, and is somewhat similar to the YM3812 (OPL2) and YMF262 (OPL3) FM ICs that were used in the popular AdLib and Creative Labs Sound Blaster soundcards for the PC.
The YM2612 does not provide any timing or buffering of the PCM samples, so all frequency control and buffering must be done in software by the host processor.

The data is logged to a file through the use of emulator s running a ROM image.

Sega Genesis Audio Quality - The Problem - Sega-16 Forums
For the YM2612, it sets the DAC (not the 6th channel DAC, I am talking about the FM DACs), so it can produce a steady audio wave.
To the CPU, this is fine, to the YM2612, this was a disaster, it made the DAC clock itself down, to be able to produce anything.
The YM2612 in it is a CLONE, and lives inside the 315 chipset.

The new version of the format now supports PCM optimization for the Yamaha YM2612 sound chip, what makes sound files using the chip a lot smaller - sometimes with over 75% of size reduction.
The first YM2612 VGM archive, Project 2612, optimized all of its packages soon after.

It's the player (and it's driver) which produces the sound, not the format itself (but as I said, GYM is an exception to this, because of improper logging).
I don't own the game, so I don't know wether it is the YM2612 emulator or the soundtrack which stands for the creation / loss of the reverb.
