YMCA Youth and Government is a program run by the YMCA in the United States to educate high school students about the principles of democratic government.
Begun in New York in 1936, the Youth and Government program was the brainchild of Clement Duran, the Boy's Work Secretary of the Albany YMCA.
His idea of model youth legislatures continues to be the guiding idea in today's Youth and Government programs, and the motto for his program, "Democracy Must Be Learned by Each Generation", is the motto for all Youth and Government programs in the United States.

The YMCA movement was founded in London on June 6, 1844 by George Williams and a group of like-minded Evangelical Christians.
The first YMCA in North America was opened in Montreal, Quebec by the congregation of Saint James Methodist Church on November 25, 1851, and the first in the United States opened on December 29, 1851 in Boston, Massachusetts.
In 2003 a youth convention was arranged in Prague with attendance from almost all countries in Europe to celebrate the healing of the wounds from the "iron curtain".

The Youth in Government program was born in the United States in 1936 when the first ever youth model legislature was held in Albany, New York.

Others not directly involved in the governing process produced a nightly newscast ---- shown on their hotel's closed-circuit television system ---- and produced a daily newspaper highlighting conference events.
There were committee meetings to attend, legislation to draft, court cases to settle and the people's business to conduct which, for five days in February, they did with a with a sense of duty and cooperation some say is missing from those who occupy positions in Sacramento during the rest of the year.
