Topic: YMF262

 MBHP OPL3 Module
The YMF262 sound chip was mostly sold in a 24-pin SOP package which is (unfortunately) hard to handle for soldering novices.
Desoldering the YMF262 and YAC512 from and old soundblaster (or compatible) card is one of the most critical things in this project which requires some practice.
The easiest way I found out is the use of an isolated copper cable (can be taken from a old coil or transformer), which has to be threaded beneath the small SMD pins.

YM2612 is a 6 channel FM synthesis (Frequency Modulation) sound synthesizer IC produced by Yamaha.
It belongs to a family of Yamaha FM synthesizer chips, and can be considered an ancestor to the OPL2 (YM3812) and OPL3 (YMF262) FM ICs that were used in the popular AdLib and Creative Labs SoundBlaster PC soundcards.
The YM2612 was notably used in the Sega Megadrive (aka Sega Genesis) game console and has the following features:

Slightly off-topic I know but bear with me. I'm looking for a source of Yamaha YMF262 chips - if anyone knows a common soundcard that uses / used them please let me know.
Therefore, once I have the Sound Expander's schematic it should be possible to make a stereo 4 operator sound expansion which is backwards-compatible with Commdore's original Sound Expander and the upgraded YM3812 one I mentioned on the list a while back.
