Yoga - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yoga (from Sanskrit yuj, meaning yoke) is an ancient family of spiritual practices that originated in India.
Yoga is a variety of Indian traditions geared towards self-discipline and the realization of unity, which includes forms of exercise widely practiced in the West today that promote balance, coordination, flexibility, and meditation.
The word "yoga"--from the Sanskrit root yuj ("to yoke")--is generally translated as "union" or "integration." This may be understood as union with the Divine, or integration of body, mind, and spirit.

Where the root verb is yuj, here yoga means addition, two + two = four, this is addition.
When the word yoga is derived from the root verb 'yunj + ghain', (not 'yuj' but 'yunj'), in that case the meaning is not addition but unification.
And if the meaning of yunj is accepted, the explanation is still more correct because when the aspirant becomes one with the Supreme Entity, there remains no separate identity of the unit with the Supreme Entity.

It is my hope that this Centre will provide a forum for those willing to look more deeply within; that it becomes a place of study, a place of refuge and a place to take fruitful and constructive steps towards greater understanding, tolerance and peace - both within and without.

The Gita and Yoga (Yoga, Hatha Yoga, Chakras, Kundalini)
Whoever may have written the Gita, it seems very probable that he was not acquainted with the technical sense of yoga as the cessation of mental states (citta-vrtti-nirodha), as used by Patanjali in his Yoga-sutra, I. I have elsewhere shown that there are three roots, yujir yoge and yuj samadhau, i.e.
the root yujir, to join, and the root yuj in the sense of cessation of mental states or one-pointedness, and yuj samyamane, i.e.
The primary sense of the word yoga in the Gita is derived from the root yujir yoge or yuj, to join, with which is connected in a negative way the root yuj in the sense of controlling or restricting anything to that to which it is joined.
