YVTO - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
YVTO is the callsign of the official time signal from the Juan Manuel Cagigal Naval Observatory in Caracas, Venezuela.
The content of YVTO's signal, which is a continuous 1 kW amplitude modulated carrier wave at 5 MHz, is much simpler than that broadcast by some of the other time signal stations around the world, such as WWV.
YVTO also transmits 100 ms-long beeps of 1000 Hz every second, except for thirty seconds past the minute.

[HCDX]: YVTO address etc.   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-01)
The Venezuelan time signal station YVTO 5000 kHz was nicely audible some time ago in early morning hours here in Finland...
I had some trouble in finding the address for correspondence, but fortunately the station was mentioned in an older WRTH so that I could send a report (plus 1 USD) to them.
Anyway, there's a JPEG file of 98 kB showing the YVTO building and transmitter.

Venezuela's all-Spanish international service can sometimes be heard on 9540 kHz, as long as the more powerful intenational broadcasters make room for it.
In the East, YVTO can be heard in the early evening before WWV fades in on 5 MHz.
Venezuelan stations on the whole don't seem to be much better than the rest of Latin America when it comes to QSLing, but the more easily heard stations are generally good verifiers.

Near posted coordinates of YVTO Venezuelan time station, which is located at the Cagigal naval observatory.
This must be the observatory, not sure where the YVTO 5MHz transmitter is, but probably somewhere to the north.

During my stay in Venezuela, I made band scans to check over the existence and nature of any broadcasting activity on shortwave.
I confirmed that four stations on shortwave in operation: Radio Táchira on 4830 kHz, Radio Amazonas on 4940 kHz, Ecos del Torbes on 4980 kHz and YVTO El Observatorio Naval Juan Manuel Cagigal.
There are no other Venezuelan stations regularly on shortwave due to economical reason.
