Y-Gerät (navigation) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Y-Gerät (Y-gadget) also known as Wotan was a radio navigation system used by the Luftwaffe in World War II to aid bomber navigation.
With the standard beam systems clearly no longer of any use, some sort of entirely new system would have to be developed.
The planes did not have to "fly the beam", ground controllers would plot the position of the plane and give instructions over radio to correct their path.

Patent 4385259: Dynamic convergence control apparatus for shadow mask CRT displays
Desirably, both beams should be focused such that they intersect at the one screen hole 26a so that as they emerge from the hole they separate or diverge, the "red" beam energizing a red phosphor dot and the "green" beam energizing a green dot resulting in a yellow color to the observer's eye.
During calibration of the completely assembled CRT, all three of the beams are turned on and adjusted to form a predetermined pattern, for example a spot or short line, which is then deflected by applying predetermined signals to the deflection coil 35 to position the spot at each of the sectors of the screen.
The normally bipolar X and Y position signals are converted to unipolar signals and buffered by amplifiers 62 and 63 and applied to the input terminals of conventional high speed, synchronous A/D converters 40 and 41 which are driven by a suitable clock 64 operating at, for example, 5 MHz.

Ex Astris Scientia - Treknology Encyclopedia L-Z
Tractor beams are based on a subspace field assisted emission of gravitons, their direction can be reversed to push away an object.
Among them are navigational sensors which determine the ship's position and velocity and scientific sensors for astronomical observation, planetary surface analysis and remote lifeform analysis.
Shipboard phaser banks are attached to the outer hull of a starship in form of small apertures or domes in the 23rd century that are extended to segmented strips and finally rings in the 24th century.

Glossary of WWII German military terms - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Y-Beam -- German aircraft navigational system which utilized a single station that radiated a directional beam plus a ranging signal which the bomber picked up and re-transmitted to enable the ground controllers to compute the range and know when to order the bombs to be dropped.
Wotan (navigation) -- alternative name for Y-Gerät radio radio navigation system.
Some factories that were the primary producers of military equipment, especially tanks, are also given.

Dorset and the Development of the Radar
The GEE system of radio navigation was under development during 1941 and came into operational use in March 1942.
New aerials were developed, shorter, more effective wavelengths were employed (using the newly developed Magnetron) and special navigational and bomb-aiming aids were rapidly conceived.
Knickerbein was later refined into the "X- beam and Y-beam" systems known as " precision bombing systems known as known as "Wotan 1 and 2".

 97.497: RoboTag - Contest Rules
While the selection of light source and the beam tightening is left up to the individual groups, there are a number of specifications in regards to the size of the beam, the intensity of the light, the duration of pulse when firing, and the time between "shots".
The above illustration details the maximum x-y beam swing while the beam is on, compared with the maximum robot sizes at the source, 6 feet, and 12 feet.
The device must project a white beam of light (a filter may be added later)

Meteorological radiosondes that use navigation systems to determine winds (and horizontal location) can be susceptible to data loss in thunderstorm environments.
Tests were made by flying the GPS radiosonde into three thunderstorms on free balloons that also carried an electric field meter and a long range navigation (LORAN) radiosonde of a type previously tested.
The KDP estimates are shown to produce the highest quality data, although variations in drop size distribution characteristics have a significant effect on the rain estimates.

Structural engineering other topics - Unbraced Column Length
If the beams framed into the column webs, then the column would be braced in the weak-axis or the Y-Y direction and not necessarily the the X-X axis.
The beams are continually braced by precast concrete plank.
If you can justify transferring the force required to resist buckling of the top of the column (an old rule of thumb is 2 percent of the axial load) through the two connections into the adjacent beams, then yes, the column is braced.

Structural engineering other topics - Beam geom. input in PCACOL for slender columns
The slab adds some stiffness so using it as a pseudo beam is fine as long as you use the correct properties - take into account span, effective width and Ie.
Do you assume a 'beam' width equal to the dimension of the column, and that the slab provides some rotational restraint?
Or is that an invalid assumption, and it is best to use the option in PCACOL for 'no beam specified'.

 War -
In the blitz of London and other cities, the Luftwaffe used a system called Knickebein, in which bombers followed one radio beam broadcast from ground stations on the continent until that beam was intersected by another beam at a point over the target.
With visual navigation impossible except on the clearest moonlit nights, electronic aids became vital.
Lead bombers dropped incendiary bombs, which set fires that guided other bombers carrying high explosives as well as more incendiaries.

Then in the next chapter, there’s a reason why the British Prime Minister titles it “The Wizard War.” Now that the German forces were ruling most of the continent, he writes, they had erected radio transmission towers all over the place, and their dive bombers were using them for navigation.
Now, instead of a single radio beam, which tended to spread and distort, Germany was going to be sending out a “split beam,” two parallel signals.
However, the English forces surreptitiously figured out how to beam up their own signals, from their own stations, and throw the German Messerschmitts off course.

Knickebein (navigation) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Knickebein was a radio navigation system used by the Luftwaffe early in World War II to aid bomber navigation.
It was replaced with the X-Gerät (navigation) system.
Much larger antennas with considerably smaller beam angles were set up, and broadcast power was increased considerably.

 GUIDANCE, NAVIGATION AND CONTROL
Navigation aids on board the orbiter include the three inertial measurement units, three tactical air navigation units, two air data probe assemblies, three microwave scan beam landing systems and two radar altimeters.
Therefore, data from other navigation sensors-air data system, tactical air navigation, microwave scan beam landing system and radar altimeter-is blended into the state vector at different phases of entry to provide the necessary accuracy.
Since the navigation base provides the mount for the IMUs and star trackers, the star tracker line of sight is referenced to the navigation base and the orbiter coordinate system; thus, the GPC knows where the star tracker is pointed and its orientation with respect to the IMUs.
