Yet Another Setup Tool - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
YaST is free software since Novell has made YaST available under the GPL.
YaST2 is a fairly complete and competent tool for administering a SUSE Linux installation.
It allows administrators to install software, configure hardware, setup networks and servers and more.

 SDB:Using YaST2 in Text Mode - openSUSE
YaST2 had to be usable in both graphical and text mode, and also be scalable on other interfaces.
If an X server is running on your system and YaST2 is started in the text mode under an X window manager, it is likely that the ALT shortcuts have already been assigned in the window manager configuration.
The use of YaST2 in text mode may seem unusual, but is in fact very easy.

 The YaST2 Screen Shot HowTo
If you make screen shots during the first stage of a YaST2 installation, make sure to copy the files from the RAM disk (/tmp) to a somewhat less volatile medium, such as a floppy, before the reboot.
During the first part of a YaST2 installation, the /tmp directory resides on the RAM disk, so its contents are gone when the system is initialized.
Thus, for screen shots of YaST2 in text mode during installation, you have to use an emulator like VM-Ware and a conventional screen shot utility (ksnapshot, xv, xgrabsc, xwd, etc.).

 LWN: The YaST2 Package Manager
YaST2 is a completely rewritten interface to the (as always, RPM-based) package management system with a number of new features.
YaST2 appears to have the ability to display conflict problems and to allow users to resolve them as they best see fit - including that all important "I know what I'm doing, just do it" option.
YaST2 has not been made available separately, so it will be necessary to wait for the 8.1 distribution to try it out.

Orb Designs Test Labs - SuSE's YaST2, Introduction
Yast2 is fairly well documented in the Configuration paper-bound book that accompanies the retail distribution, but the tool is straight forward and easy to use, with decent contextual help.
Yast2 is a fairly complete and competent tool for administering a SuSE installation.
When starting YaST2, you're prompted first for the root user's password, for the level of permission necessary for the operations that are run.

SUSE Linux - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
At this gathering it was also announced that the proprietary SUSE administration program YaST2 would be released into the public under the GPL license.
SUSE has the ability to detect and install drivers for many common winmodems shipped with OEM desktop and laptop systems (such modems are designed to use Windows-specific software to operate).
Several desktop environments such as KDE and GNOME and window managers like Window Maker and Blackbox are included, with the YaST2 installer allowing the user to choose a preselection of GNOME, KDE, or no desktop at all.

Finally, yast2 started the sound configuration, but this failed due to other reasons (see the paragraph about sound configuration), and after this there appeared the KDE login screen.
During installation, yast2 tried to configure the soundchip, but this failed, showing an error message for fractions of a second only.
So I guess the problems I had with 6.4 were not caused by Yast2, it detected an "Ensoniq 1371"-Type of chip correctly, but the mixer driver still is buggy.

 The YaST2 Package Manager
Specially optimized versions were implemented for both graphical user interface (the YaST2 Qt UI) or text interface (the YaST2 NCurses UI), providing each type of user with the tool that best fits his needs.
It is intended for advanced users and experts, but experience so far has shown that average users get their tasks done with it.
Since this part of YaST2 is now split up into two independent binary versions, we were able to optimize both versions for their respective environments: The Qt version for the graphical environment and the NCurses version for pure text environment.

Yast2 was perfectly happy to install components that were incompatible with each other or with the hardware, rendering the system unbootable, while giving no warning messages.

If you invoke the command yast2 manually from an xterm or a ``Run command'' dialog and your X session isn't being run as root, the on-line update will fail, returning a misleading error about being unable to locate the update list on the specified FTP server.
That doesn't mean you must run YaST2 only from a root X session; it means that if you don't, you should use the menu item automatically created by SuSE for YaST2, in which case you'll be prompted for the root password and the on-line update will work properly.
In my enthusiasm for up2date and YaST2, I haven't yet mentioned one other simple method for updating RPM files: the rpm command itself, which works equally well on Red Hat (and its derivatives) and SuSE.

/dev/loki: How to use smart with SUSE Linux Factory
As probably everyone knows, it still has a few major issues with the new package management backend in YaST2, which is quite unfortunate because apart from that, 10.1 is awesome.
For the 10.1RC1 RPMs of smart, the preconfigured repositories are wrong, as they point to the locations where the repositories of 10.1 final will be available.
Here is how to change the channel (in smart speak) / installation source (in YaST2 speak) configuration to use the SUSE Linux Factory repository instead.
