Yabusame (流鏑馬) is a type of Japanese archery, one that is performed while riding a horse.
Nowadays, yabusame is performed at the Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine in Kamakura.
A yabusame demonstration was given in the United Kingdom for Prince Charles, who reportedly was fascinated and pleased with the performance.

Yabusame is classical mounted archery performed as rites of purity for Shinto shrines.
They are not archery for entertainment or fighting skills per se, but more as a public ritual once done by warrior clans to help sanctify a Shinto event.
The Ogasawara-ryu, one of the oldest still existing schools of classical etiquette and archery, performed a demonstration of yabusame in the summer of 1999 in Honolulu, Hawai'i.

Yabusame, the art of archery on horseback, is one of Japan’s oldest traditions.
Yabusame dates back to the Kamakura Era (12th century) when the shogun Minamoto no Yoritomo (1147-1199) set up his government in Kamakura.
In 1187, Yoritomo ordered that the Shinto ritual of yabusame be practiced at Tsurugaoka-hachiman Shrine in Kamakura in order to promote discipline and religious devotion in his army of samurai.
