  Aztecs and Mayas religion
With the Maya peoples the original nature and agrarian deities were the ancient gods, whereas the gods they had adopted from the Toltects, like the great god Quetzalcoatl (Plumed Serpent), were the younger ones, who were more involved in the cosmic and socio-cultural aspects of their civilization.
Yacatecuhtli, the god of the merchants, was probably one of the forms in which Quetzalcoatl was worshipped.
Examples are the gods Yacatecuhtli (the god of the merchants) and Huitzilopochtli (the god of the Azteca-Mcxica), who have been mentioned before.

Taube (1992:88) suggests that the Maya God M derives from the Central Mexican god Yacatecuhtli, the god of merchants.
Like the image of God M in the Santa Rita murals, Yacatecuhtli has an elongated nose but lacks fl coloring.
The yellow markings around this figure's mouth associate him with the jaguar, an attribute that arose during the Post-Classic period and was originally associated with God L, a Maya merchant god popular during the Classic period (Taube 1992:92).
