 US Yachting Flags
The U.S. yacht ensign is a variant of the national ensign in which the union consists of thirteen stars in a ring surrounding a fouled anchor set diagonally.
When the secretary of the New York Yacht Club solicited members' ideas for a design in late 1848, he specifically described the flag as a "distinguishing flag to be worn at the masthead," not as an ensign that would have been worn at the stern or gaff.
Nevertheless, probably because of its resemblance to the national ensign, the yacht ensign came to be flown in lieu of it as early as 1850.

Thus, when the owner of My Issue first came to the yard and expressed his desire for a speedy vessel of Moonen standards of quality, it was inevitable that Bilterijst himself would take to the drawing board.
As is the case with all Moonen yachts, considerable attention was paid to noise attenuation, an area that is always problematic with high speed, lightweight constructions.
Thanks to her long and slender profile, the trim is optimal at all speeds and in every sea condition, as is the overall sailing performance.

 Scuttlebutt News: 33rd America's Cup
The KISS answer to the “keel yacht”/multihull issue (as I said in #13) is that, under the Deed, as long as the challenger sets forth the number of masts and the four dimensions required by the Deed, the defender can respond with anything it pleases within the parameters of the deed.
Because the issue of whether GGYC is a proper challenger is already briefed on the motion to renew and reargue (but not yet forwarded to Justice Cahn), Justice Cahn advanced the argument from January 28 to January 23 and held the dispute over the order to that date.
In addition, the issue of whether a multihull may sail is different from the issue of whether the issuer of a multihull challenge is a proper challenger.

San Luis Obispo County’s website | 02/22/2008 | Dan Walters: Both sides harbor tax loopholes
The yacht tax break – or "sloophole," as Democrats have dubbed it – is back on the legislative agenda this year as a symbol for both parties of their inability to fix the state budget.
But the stalemate on the relatively tiny yacht tax issue indicates that it is not a path likely to be taken, not only because Republicans erroneously consider closing loopholes to be tax increases, but because others proposed by Hill would be offensive to many Democrats and their political constituencies.
It's easy for Democrats to demagogue the yacht tax issue, but they haven't rushed to close other loopholes that hit their side of the aisle, including Hill's biggest proposal, scaling back a special income tax credit for children that benefits middle- and working-class Californians, or eliminating a special tax break for the elderly.

For example, such yachts' engines typically discharge most of their fuel energy as waste heat into the sea or air, then use engine-generated electricity to provide thermal services such as water heating, space heating, and clothes drying.
Today's yachts typically use a large diesel engine (so large that one must generally cut a hole in the ship to replace it) for propulsion, and run medium-sized diesel generators continuously to generate electricity.
