  Yad Vashem - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Yad Vashem (יד ושם) is Israel's official memorial to the Jewish victims of the Holocaust established in 1953 through the Memorial Law passed by the Knesset, Israel's parliament.
In 1993, the Yad Vashem institute decided to build a new, larger museum to replace the old, smaller museum, which was built during the 1960's.
For example, a small garden and plaque on the grounds of Yad Vashem is dedicated to the people of Le Chambon-sur-Lignon in France who, during World War II, made their town a haven for Jews fleeing from the Nazis.

Yad Vashem, the national Authority for the Remembrance of the Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust, was established in 1953 by act of the Knesset (Israel’s parliament) to commemorate the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered by the Nazis and their collaborators during the years 1933-1945.
The task of Yad Vashem is to perpetuate the memory and lessons of the Holocaust for future generations.
Central state ceremonies are held at Yad Vashem each year on Remembrance Day for the Martyrs and Heroes of the Holocaust, which is observed according to the Hebrew Calendar on the 27th day of Nisan, the anniversary of the start of the 1943 Warsaw Ghetto Revolt.

Featuring a soaring cone with 600 photos of victims and a lower cone dug into the bedrock and filled with reflecting water, the memorial is surrounded by circular shelves with 2 million pages of testimony filled out by relatives of those who died.
There is room for 6 million pages, and Yad Vashem hopes its recently unveiled database of victims (yadvashem.org) will help fill in the empty spaces by allowing people all over the world to submit the names of lost relatives.
