The tribe or the river also give the name to the Pee Dee region of South Carolina, composed of the northeastern counties of the state.
The lower part of the river flood plain was extensively developed for rice culture in colonial time, rice being a major export of the area from the port at Georgetown.
At the junction of the Pee Dee and Lynches River is a large island, Snows Island (subsequently identified as the center of an old meteor crater), that was headquarters for General Francis Marion during the American Revolution.

The Yadkin-Pee Dee River Basinwide Water Quality Management Plan concluded in 1998 that about 9 percent, or 57 segments of the Yadkin River Basin totaling about 400 miles were considered "impaired waters." That means that they don’t meet state or federal water quality standards.
With 7,400 square miles, or 15.6 percent of the land area, the Yadkin is the second largest drainage basin in the state.
Portions of the Roaring River in eastern Wilkes and Hunting Creek in southwestern Yadkin County could be reclassified as high water quality or outstanding resource waters – a classification now held by the Mitchell River.

Biologists believe the robust redhorse, first discovered in the Yadkin River in 1870, was once common in the river and may have been present as far upstream as Winston-Salem.
In 1980, one robust redhorse was captured in the Savannah River in Georgia.
Sedimentation from development, altered river flows and blocked passages from dam constructions, as well as predation from transplanted, large catfish species have all played a part in the robust redhorse’s population decline.
