Here, for ten years, the pious Rivka (YaelAbecassis) has devoted herself to her husband Meir (Yoram Hattab), but their marriage remains childless.
Although Malka (Meital Barda) is in love with Yaakov (Sami Hori), who broke his connection to Orthodox Judaism when he joined the army, she consents to marrying the man to whom the Rabbi has willed her, and she quickly finds herself trapped in a miserable, abusive relationship.
Meanwhile, Malka's sister Rivka (YaelAbecassis), is forced to end her 10-year marriage to Meir (Yoram Hattab), because she has not fulfilled her obligation to bear him a child.

He recently rented one of the nearby apartments in the building for a secret rendezvous with a beautiful and self-deprecating woman named Gabi (Yael Abelcassis).
Their intense, unequal and often-violent love affair turns Gabi's life into a public and dissonant garble of psychological pain and physical pleasure.

The camerawork here is first rate, capturing the action in a series of extended single takes separated by fadeouts with the camera moving through, inside and out of the apartment building and elsewhere in Tel Aviv, capturing the city's rundown vibe.
A prolific chronicler of Israeli life whose films include KADOSH (2000) and KIPPUR (2000), Gitai gives his actors a lot of room to improvise, and the performances in ALILA are generally strong, with the lovely Abecassis a standout.
