Yet some Israelis point to the Ayash killing as an ultimate success: After his death, Hamas operations tailed off, partly because of a crackdown on Hamas by Arafat but also because many believe Ayash's loss robbed Hamas of one of its sharpest minds.

CNN Feedback: Comments from our users and our replies: March 5, 1996
Three months ago, Israel proudly announced the killing of Yahya Ayash in the middle of the peace process.
Yet, just three weeks ago he was calling Yihye Ayash ("The Engineer") a martyr, and allowed a Hamas demonstration to take place in Kalkilya under the benevolent eye of his personal police force, complete with a mock bus bombing (reported on CNN).
It is now clear that the American and Israeli governments indulged in reckless fantasy when this "peace" process was initiated on the White House lawn three years ago.

Fierce criticism of Yassin, whose character was until recently considered beyond reproach even by secular Palestinians, has gradually begun to emerge inside the occupied territories as well.
In Gaza, a militant Hamas faction calling itself "Units of the Martyr Yahya Ayash" distributed leaflets earlier this month charging Yassin with responsibility for the deaths of several members of the al Kassam brigades and called upon him to "come to your senses or resign."
The ultimate objectives of the two opposing camps remain the same, however: putting an end to the Oslo process, supplanting the secular regime of Yasser Arafat, and (eventually) driving the Israelis out of Palestine altogether.

Israel and its successive governments have pursued targeted killing as a policy to eliminate Palestinian activists who deal in violence and terror.
According to the judicial system in Israel, capital punishment is not allowed, yet this policy persists despite its failure -- for example it was a major factor in the elections for Shimon Peres, when the engineer Yahya Ayash was liquidated in Gaza, and Netanyahu won the elections.
The vicious cycle of violence, at present, has led to Islamic Jihad to retaliate against the policy of targeted killing of its activists.
