		Yahya Khan was born in Peshawar in 1917 to a family of soldiers.
		An infantry officer from the 4/10 Baluch Regiment, Yahya saw action during WW II in North Africa where he was captured by the Axis Forces in June 1942 and interned in a prisoner of war camp in Italy from where he escaped in the third attempt.
		Yahya became a brigadier at the age of 34 and commanded the 106 Infantry Brigade, which was deployed on the ceasefire line in Kashmir in 1951-52.

		Khan was born in the village of Rehana near Haripur Hazara to an ethnic Pashtun family, the first child of the second wife of Mir Dad Khan, who was a Risaldar Major in Hodson's Horse.

		In response to Yahya Khan's March 6 broadcast in which he announced his decision to convene the National Assembly on March 25, Sheikh Mujib put forward four conditions of which the fourth one, transfer of power to the elected representatives of the people, was the most crucial to the Awami League.
		There was not the slightest possibility either of Yahya Khan or of Zulfiqar Ali Bhutto to concede that demand and it meant that there was practically no possibility of holding the National Assembly session on March 25 as announced by President Yahya.
		Wali Khan, President National Awami Party, criticising Bhutto's demand for transfering power separately to East and West Pakistan said, "We would like to have clarifications whether the concept of a single state is there in the proposal.” He said it should be clear that West Pakistan ceased to exist politically since July 1, 1970.
