Russian Aviation Page: Features: Yak-9 at Champlin Fighter Museum
I identified myself to the staff of the museum as a MiG and Yak owner, and I was rewarded with a behind the ropes, open the cockpit and climb-in tour of the collection.
Interestingly, the aircraft's wing spar is intact and Yak is in flyable conditions.
When aircraft was brought to Mesa and reassembled, Sergei Kotov suggested to test fly the Yak (most of the planes in Champlin's collection are flyable), but Doug Champlin declined this offer due to the great risk involved in flying of one of the kind airplane.

  The Yakovlev Yak-25 & Yak-28
Although the Yakovlev OKB would eventually focus on airliners and transports, the organization did make a major contribution to Red air power, in the form of a series of supersonic twinjet combat aircraft, the "Yak-25" through "Yak-28", that were built in good numbers and served in a wide range of roles.
In the meantime, the Yak OKB was also working on an externally similar reconnaissance variant, the "Yak-122", with a single prototype flown in 1955; and a supersonic interceptor variant, originally designated "Yak-121" but then given the designation of "Yak-27".
In 1960, the Yak OKB was tasked with the development of a Yak-28 interceptor variant, designated the "Yak-28P".

Yakovlev Yak-9U - The Air Combat Wiki
Rather than being a further development of the Yak-3, the Yak 9U was the culmination of improvements made to the two-seat trainer version of the original Yak-1.
Of course this meant that it shared many of the same flaws and they were too numerous to allow novice pilots to fly the plane.
Armament consisted of the standard engine-mounted ShVAK cannon and a single 7.62mm ShKAS machine gun in the cowl and the plane had basically the same performance as the Yak-1s of the period.

An entire Yak fighter tree with the whole lot of its branches takes its birth from the I-26 and the forefathers of the Yak-1/3 and 7/9 families differ in a minimum of details dictated by the purpose of the respective planes, the Yak-1 being the fighter and the Yak-7 being its trainer version.

A ton of information about the Russian YAk-3, WWII fighter
The Yak 3 was an elegant aircraft, weighing less than 6000 lbs in full battle order and had an astonishing rate of climb.
The basic essence of Yak design was robust simplicity, an overriding requirement caused by the harsh Russian climate and a need to remain operational over vast snowbound areas, far from industrial facilities, with the minimum of servicing.
Last of the wartime Yaks, the -9U, was retained in Germany and ironically, used for the 'buzzing' and harassment of Western aircraft during the Berlin Airlift, when the Russians attempted to isolate that city in 1948-49.

There are major disagreements between sources on the Yak fighter, and though it is relatively straightforward to identify a Yak-1, Yak-3, Yak-7, or Yak-9, assignment of a particular subvariant type and specification should be taken with a bit of skepticism.

On the Yak fighter, the number and position of the various fuel cells--and therefore, of course, their filler caps, etc.--is one of the key items used to sort the different versions one from another.
On the Yak fighter there are two notable pattern fuel gauges, an earlier and a later variety.
It is not difficult to imagine that this arrangement was very much superior to the earlier instrument, but with the added complication of having two separate versions of the unit (port and starboard).

 yak
Although not nearly so well known as Western contemporary fighters, the Yak series, principally the Yak-3 and the Yak-9, were arguably the best fighters of the Second World War.
Of the Yak fighters, the Yak-3 (interestingly enough a slightly later aircraft than the Yak-9) was viewed as a light-weight, short-life fighter, and most Yak-3s were of mixed construction, ie with wooden wings.
Conversely the Yak-9 were seen as a high-quality long-term aircraft, and therefore it is particularly sad that so few have survived.
