  Yakov Zak - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Born in Odessa, Zak studied at the Conservatory there with Starkhova and later with Heinrich Neuhaus in Moscow.
From 1935 Zak taught at the Moscow Conservatory, becoming a professor in 1947 and being granted a chair in 1965.
In 1966 Yakov Zak was made People's Artist of the USSR.

Valery Afanassiev (born 8 September 1947) is a Russian pianist.
He studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory with Emil Gilels and Yakov Zak.
In 1969 he was prizewinner at the Bach Competition in Leipzig, three years later at the Concours Reine Elisabeth in Brussels.

His grandfather, Vasily Rodionovich Petrov, the outstanding Russian bass, spent twenty years as a soloist at the Bolshoi Theatre, where he performed with such stars as Shaliapin, Nezhdanova and other great opera singers.
In 1961, Nikolai Petrov graduated from the Central Musical School where he had studied under T.E. Kestner, and between 1962 and 1968 he completed under-graduate and post-graduate studies at the Moscow Conservatory under Professor Yakov Zak.
Petrov first won public acclaim in 1962 when he took the silver medal at the First International Van Cliburn Competition in the United States.

Elisso Virsaladze was born in Tbilisi, Georgia, and began her piano studies under her grandmother, the famous pianist and teacher Anastasia Virsaladze - both in private and at the Tbilisi School for Gifted Children - and graduated from the local conservatory.
She then moved to Moscow, where she studied under the famed pianists Heinrich Neuhaus and Yakov Zak.
Elisso's performance debut took place in Tbilisi at the age of 16, and her first competition award (Silver medal) came in 1959 at the World Youth Festival in Vienna; shortly thereafter she became a laureate at the Tchaikovsky Competition - which earned her considerable fame, given her young age.

It's a quite interesting CD called "The Golden Twelve" (Vol.1) featuring the first four winners of the International Chopin Piano Competition.
There's also Alexsandre Ununsky, who won in 1932, Yakov Zak (1937) and Bella Davidovich (1949).
It's interesting to listen to these old intrepretations, so I can definately recommend this CD if it can be found anywhere but Poland.
