The City is situated on an agricultural plain, close to Lake Shinji (known for its migratory swans in winter), with the Hii River in the east and the Kando River in the west, and is adjacent to the Sea of Japan.
Izumo, mentioned in the "Izumo no Kuni Fudoki" (733 AD) as a "place of outstanding bountiful land and charming people," is the second largest city of Shimane Prefecture (next to Matsue, the prefecture capital), and has prospered since ancient times as the hub of a region rich in ancient history.
Traditional crafts include Yakumo lacquer, Keyaki woodcraft, pottery, tsutsugaki aizome (indigo dyed cotton), washi (handmade paper), and the hariko no tora (small tigers made of paper used to pray for children to grow up healthy, as well as other characters from astrology).

Yakumo is a small village of 7000 people located 10 kilometers from Matsue City, the prefectural capital of Shimane.
Participating theatre groups are asked to do 2 back to back performances, no longer than 50 minutes in the language of their choice but preferably visually based, so as to overcome linguistic and cultural boundaries.

Chamberlain helped Hearn secure a position teaching English at Matsue in Shimane Prefecture, where he fell in love with a Japan that was rapidly passing into history.
This traveling exhibition of some fifty first printed issues, unpublished photos, along with reproductions of the author's original manuscripts commemorates the centennial of Koizumi Yakumo's naturalization as a Japanese.

It was discovered by Ikuo Tsunematsu, a Japanese expert on Anglo-Japanese cultural history, who found it among a sheaf of old documents kept by Diosy's relatives.
Born in 1850 of Irish-Greek parentage, Hearn arrived in Japan in 1890 and quickly fell in love with the country and its people by virtue of a teaching stint in the provincial town of Matsue, Shimane Prefecture, where he married the daughter of a local samurai.
Taking the name Yakumo Koizumi upon assuming citizenship in 1896, Hearn produced several works, including, "Glimpses of Unfamiliar Japan" and "Out of the East," which portrayed in time-capsule fashion to the West the romantic and mystical traditions of a rapidly modernizing Japan.
