Yala National Park, also known as Ruhuna, is an important national park on the south east coast of Sri Lanka.
The park was badly damaged by the tsumami of 26th December 2004, with the destruction of the wildlife centre and tourist lodge.
Yala has the world's highest concentration of Leopards, although seeing this largely nocturnal carnivore still requires some luck.

Elephants are the most often-spotted inhabitants of the vast Yala National Park in the southeast of Sri Lanka, east of Matara, but they share the reserve with 130 different species of birds and other creatures like sambhur, spotted deer, sloths, crocodiles, monkeys, wild boar and porcupines.
Yala is also dotted with a number of archaeological sites, like the Magul Maha Vihara ruins, dating from the 1st century BC.

Yala is the largest National Park in Sri Lanka and is the home of most of the large mammals of the country including wild elephants, wild boar, wild buffalo, leopard, bear and deer.
The Situlpauwa Monastery and Dagaba is a great attraction in Yala.
Raptors such as Changeable Hawk-eagle, White bellied Sea Eagle and Crested Serpent eagle are also commonly seen apart from many species of large flocks of migratory and indigenous birds.

"Yala Safari" tourist hotel in close proximity to the main gate of Yala National Park has been completely destroyed.
Tidal waves had reached a distance of about a kilometre into the interior of Yala National Park and that area has been reduced to fallow land, having been completely washed away.
An employee of Yala Safari hotel, Jagath Kumara Kariyawasam who had managed to escape with his life said that about 50 persons of those who were in the hotel at that time, managed to save themselves by fleeing the danger areas or climbing huge trees but nearly 100 others had disappeared.
