Yale Repertory Theatre at Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut was founded by Robert Brustein, dean of the Yale School of Drama in 1966, with the goal of facilitating a meaningful collaboration between theatre professionals and talented students.
The dean of the Yale School of Drama is the artistic director of the Yale Repertory Theatre, with Lloyd Richards serving in this capacity 1979-1991, Stan Wojewodski, Jr., 1991-2002, and James Bundy since 2002.
In 2002, the Yale School of Drama and Yale Repertory Theatre received the Governor's Arts Award from Governor John Rowland for artistic achievement and contribution to the arts in the state of Connecticut.

Brustein said when former Yale President Kingman Brewster (1963-1977) first asked him to become dean of the drama school, he was not sure he wanted to commit himself to the world of academia, but soon realized that given the authority of the position, he would be able to reform the school on his own terms.
By aggressively recruiting faculty and founding the Yale Repertory Theatre, Brustein said he worked to build a more professional theater training school that was more closely related to the craft of acting.
Richard Selzer, a retired professor at the Yale School of Medicine and old friend of Brustein's who attended the tea, said he remembered the former dean of the drama school as a daring and popular figure on campus.

His first commercial success was Ma Rainey's Black Bottom which was developed at the Playwrights Center in 1983 and eventually moved to premier at the Yale Repertory Theatre in 1984 and went on to Broadway where it enjoyed 275 performances and won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award.
The premier at the Yale Repertory established a collaborative bond between Wilson and Lloyd Richards who was then dean of the Yale School of Drama.

Jon began his professional theatre training at Binghamton University in New York, where he earned an MA while specializing in lighting design and technical direction.
