The pin tumbler lock is a lock mechanism that uses pins of varying lengths to prevent the lock from opening without the correct key.

This lock is now commonly used for safe deposits, combined with a small lever lock of which the custodian carries the key, and which either blocks the bolt of the main lock or covers the keyhole.
In the Yale lock, just before the chronometers run out, a trigger is released which depresses the lever by which the bolt is held in position.

In 1875, it broadened its scope from lock manufacturing to materials handling with the acquisition of patents on the Weston differential pulley block and the introduction of the first Yale hand-powered chain hoist.

By 1849 he had set up a small lock factory in Shelburne Falls, MA, and began to invent and manufacture a continuous series of improved locks, both for banks and private use.

With his Massachusetts factory busy making bank locks, in 1868 he formed a partnership with John H Towne and his son, Henry R Towne, and set up the Yale Lock Manufacturing Co in Stamford, CT to make cylinder locks.
