While Yalgorup National Park helps to protect the lakes and the important waterbird habitat they provide, along with attractive coastal vegetation that is diminishing all too rapidly, it is significant for another reason.
Yalgorup National Park lies on the western edge of the Swan Coastal Plain just south of the new Dawesville Channel near Mandurah.
The quacking frog, turtle frog and slender tree frog are among the eight frog species that inhabit the park and the long-necked oblong tortoise is present in Lake Clifton.

Local observers estimated that in the 2002-03 season up to 14 pairs nested in the southern part of Yalgorup National Park and were reasonably confident that a minimum of seven juveniles fledged in the southern part of Lake Preston.
If however the high number of juveniles (9) from Yalgorup National Park are excluded, the proportion of juveniles for the rest of the State drops to only 3.8%.

Next we looked at a Preston beach area including the Yalgorup National Park and mature pine forest to the east, but we could not find a big enough area, partially due to logging activity in the pines.
With just 7 weeks to go there was insufficient time to find a new area and start landowner negotiations so we went for the Avon Valley National Park which had already been selected as the fallback site.
