Ayalon Highway - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
The Ayalon Highway (Route 20) (Hebrew: נתיבי איילון, "Netivey Ayalon") is a major expressway in the Tel Aviv region of Israel.
This section is referred to as "Ayalon North" and connects Route 1 in the south with Route 5 and Route 2 in the north.
The long-term projection is for Route 20 to run as far north as Hadera, however, this has garnered very strong opposition from environmental groups since the road would have to cross a nature preserve and other sensitive environmental areas.

The Red Sea or the Reed Sea? > The Good News : May/June 1997   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-09)
Yam means "sea," and suph is generally thought to mean "reeds," "rushes" or possibly "seaweed." That is why some versions of the Bible call it "the Sea of Reeds" or "Reed Sea" instead of the Red Sea.
Other scholars prefer a southern route, pointing to evidence that they feel demonstrates that yam suph may mean "sea at the end of the world," as some conceive it to have been.
Yam sup came to refer to the Red Sea because like other ancient peoples, the Israelites did not distinguish the Red Sea from oceans further to the south.

The "way of the land of the Philistines" is a known route from Egypt to Canaan, but the "way of the wilderness" cannot be pinpointed.
The route called the "way of the land of the Philistines" (Ex 13:17) subsequently came to be called the "Way of the Sea" (Isa 9:1), and still later by its Latin name, Via Marls.
Both routes are logically ruled out for the fleeing Israelites, as they would be guarded by the Egyptians.

Some might "object" to placing Pi-ha-hiroth, Migdol and Yam Suph  to the north of the Ballah Lakes, because this route is usually identified by some scholars with the biblical "way of the Philistines" which Israel avoided in her initial departure from Rameses (Ex 13:17).
Both Kitchen and Hoffmeier have noted that Yam Suph is identified in the Hebrew Bible with not only the Exodus from Egypt but also with King Solomon's seaport of Ezion Geber in or near Edom on the shore of the Gulf of Aqaba.
Below, the crossing of Yam Suph, "the Reed Sea," is identified as a crossing utilizing a land corridor in the midst of the present-day three Ballah Lakes.

 RouteOfTheExodusMapSites
Professor Hoffmeier's proposal of sites for the Route of the Exodus is pretty much that of earlier scholars since the 19th century CE explorations by camel of various Bible scholars (Burkhardt, Robinson, etc.).
One of the "problems" with this route is that after crossing Yam Suph, Israel wanders 3 days in the wilderness of Shur, then stops at Marah, then Elim, then the shore of Yam Suph AGAIN.
That is to say, ALL the "earlier" scholarly proposals for Yam Suph do not fall within the parameters of between 6 to 12 miles from Rameses/Qantir, such as Lake Bardawil in the northern Sinai, Lake Ballah, Lake Timsah, the Bitter Lakes, the Suez Gulf.

The crossing of the sea signaled the end of the sojourn in Egypt and it certainly was the end of the Egyptian army that pursued the fleeing Hebrews (Ex 14:23-29; 15:4-5).
According to the biblical narratives, after crossing Yam Suph, Israel wandered for three days in the wilderness of Etham/Shur, arriving at Marah, whose water was bitter, Moses cutting down a palmtree and tossing it in to sweeten the water.
