General Yamagata Aritomo came from a poor branch of the Choshu clan, and his parents died early in his life.
Just five years later, in 1878, Yamagata Aritomo became Chief of the General Staff, a position that served as the principal source of his political power and that of other military officers.
Yamagata believed it imperative that Korea must remain out of enemy hands and under Japanese protection "for many future years or even forever." The Japanese leadership longed to take control the peninsula and the 1876 Kanghwa Treaty with Korea was the vehicle through which they would do it.
