Yamaha doesn't upgrade these unless a major bug is found (I guess the sequencer bug, discussed in other reviews, isn't major enough to fix).
How a bug this serious could slip by the guys at Yamaha is beyond me. Hopefully it?s possible to upgrade the OS on these things, otherwise this unit is next to useless to me as a standalone.
I?d love it if Yamaha would come out with a similar unit that was cheaper and didn?t have the sequencer or drum machine in it, because I would only use it as a slave to another sequencer.

  Wizoo Powered DX - Wizoo
A collection based around the classic Yamaha DX 7 is never going to set the world alight, but here the producers have aimed to get a very high quality collection of 60 odd samples that showcase the synth to the best of it's capabilities.
I think anyone who does or has owned a DX 7 will be very impressed with the samples on offer here, the producers have stuck to the mainstream sounds mostly and wisely keyed in on the most popular and best sounds that DX 7 is renowned for.
If you've ever had a DX 7 or wanted one, and would like to recreate the sounds the synth is famed for then you'll be hard pressed to find a better collection of DX based sounds than this.

The TX-7 is essentially a desktop module form of the DX-7 but is even harder to edit or program since it requires external editors or software.
DX-1 and DX-5 models which packed two DX-7 synth engines into one instrument were the epitome of the DX line of synths created by Yamaha.
Still the DX-7 has remained the all around best and most popular DX synth due to its affordable price, professional features for studio and live performance and its excellent range of sonic possibilities and extensive programmability.

IEEEVM: A New Wave of Synthesizers: The Yamaha DX-7
The Yamaha DX-7, a keyboard musical instrument using digital synthesis technology, was perhaps the most famous of the first wave of relatively inexpensive digital musical instruments introduced during the 1980s.
Yamaha, a Japanese manufacturer, was already the world’s largest maker of musical instruments when, in the 1970s, it began working on a new line of electronic keyboard synthesizers.
While it was eventually superceded by improved models (including some offered by competitors) it is remembered by thousands of musicians as their introduction to the world of digital synthesizers.

The clever bit is the way Yamaha designed the system so that the Operators can be configured into any one of 32 different interconnection patterns, some in parallel with each other, some with their output feeding the input of the next Operator.
The DX series synths have not been available new for quite a long time but their legacy lives on in some modern keyboards and computer sound cards which still utilise FM synthesis.

 DX(&SY) Synths
In 1983 Yamaha beginning with the release of DX-7 first truly digital programmable algorithm synthesizer based on the FM synthesis technology.
Yamaha DX synthesizers use "operators" to generate sound Instead of VCOs, VCAs and VCFs known from the subtractive analogue synthesizers.
In vertically connected configurations, the upper operator modulates the lower operator at a precisely controllable frequency ratio, resulting in highly complex waveforms that are the key to the DX system´s incredible sound.

Yamaha also made sure that the unit was backward compatible which means you can use old DX-7 voice data on the TX802 but not the other way around.
The TX802 is 16 note polyphonic and may play 8 different voices/timbres at a time (voices is what Yamaha calls a timbre where other manufacturers commonly refer to it as a patch).
The unit should not be compared to the third generation of FM synths that Yamaha introduced as the SY and TG-77 and the SY99, especially since these units offer samples and these samples can be used in the frequency modulation process.

The GX1 was Yamaha's first polyphonic synthesiser although innovative for its time the instrument was out of the price range of most musicians selling for £30,000 in 1976, Yamaha sold very few models.
The Yamaha CS80 polyphonic Synthesiser was a development on the GX1 model at an affordable price range (£5,000 in 1976) and competing with several other early polyphonic synthesisers such as the ARP Omni and the Moog Polymoog.

The usual confusion regarding operators and their relationship with eachother remains, as does the DX sound (love it or hate it.) This sound can be achieved on the normal DX7 which can be picked up for about #200...and that's for a nice one.
Parts are interchangeable with other DX synths and can be readily obtained for this synth from Yamaha.
Regardless of it's weight and size, Yamaha really made and produced it best work on the DX-1 and if you ever want to own and see what the best of what Yamaha has to offer, the DX-1 is still the hottest thing they've made and on the market (but rare to find).

MIDI may have taken off like a rocket, but it was not without a few disagreements between the U.S. and Japan (and between Yamaha and Roland).
For this reason, MIDI implementation of early (1983-85) instruments was a bit dicey; for example, the Yamaha DX-7 keyboard only handles a velocity range of 0-100, while its internal sound generator accepts up to 127-meaning the DX-7 sounds a bit different when its being controlled by another MIDI device or sequencing software.
In fact, MIDI operates internally at a speed of around 7 milliseconds, or 7/1000 of a second.
