Music workstation - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
They have a relatively big screen to give a comprehensive overview of the sound, sequencer and sampling options (since the display is one of the most expensive components of these workstations, Roland and Yamaha chose to cut back by not using a touch screen display, and in case of Yamaha not even a high-resolution display).
In the 1990s, Yamaha, and then Roland, released a series of portable music workstations (starting with the Yamaha QY10).
The concept of the workstation mutated around 1996 and gave birth to the groovebox - a key-less version of a workstation, still with a self-contained sound source and sequencer, mostly aimed at dance.

The '''Yamaha QY10''' is a hand-held Music workstation produced by the Yamaha Corporation in the early 1990s.
Released by Yamaha in 1990, the QY10 was the first device offering the facilities of a music workstation in a portable package.
The QY10 sold well, indicating that there was a market for these devices, so Yamaha followed it up in 1992 with the more powerful Yamaha QY20 and QY22 Yamaha QY20.

The QY10 sold well, indicating that there was a market for these devices, so Yamaha followed it up in 1992 with the more powerful Yamaha QY20.
Subsequently, both Yamaha (most Yamaha QY sequencers) and Roland (the Roland PMA-5) have produced walkstations, although neither have officially used the term "walkstation" for their products.
This made it feasible for the Kentucky LCD Interface Project to modify the QY10 with a speech interface as an assistive technology for the blind.

 Yamaha CS2x
Yamaha, its one thing creating a 'beginners' synth, but its a whole different matter extorting cash out of people in the name of 'fashion'.
Yamaha built the CS2x with dance/electronic music in mind, and thus the real strong point is in the electronic sounds.
Yamaha's Audio division is top notch, and their motorcycles rule....but I fear musicians breed stupidity like mold on bread, so you'll get lots of dumb answers, ridiculous excuses and wait ten years for a 1 week fix.

USING THE WINDOWS 3.1 MIDI MAPPER: With the Yamaha QY10
The Yamaha QY10 Walkstation is one example; take a look at Table 2 for the voices and associated patches for the QY10 and note that it does not bear much resemblance to the General MIDI specification.
Yamaha QY10 has been specified for all channels except channel 10, whilst the Patch Map Yamaha QY10 Per, has been specified for channel 10 only.
The QY10 has far less voices and drum sounds than the General MIDI sound set, so many of the QY's sounds are used more than once.

 YAMAHA QY10: Sequencing Clinic
As far as the QY10 is concerned the Pattern is no longer empty, so it will not revert to the original parameters if you record a part in a different track and then erase it.
The QY10 has no provisions for creating a song in real time; you must enter the Patterns to be played and desired transpositions in step time.
The next best option is to feed the QY10 MIDI output into a second sequencer's MIDI in, and sync the two together (I generally sync the sequencer to the QY10, which serves as the master).

 BIGGER ON THE INSIDE
No Yamaha sequencer would be complete without a 'Job' menu, and the QY70 adds a few very useful additional facilities to the ordinary Copy, Transpose, Modify and Erase jobs.
All of these follow the now-standard Yamaha convention of being alterable away from a default setting, which allows changes to be made intuitively, and then easily undone if required.
Over the years, Yamaha have gradually ramped up their software support, and with recent products like the AN1x the software has been available from the Yamaha web site as soon as the equipment has been released.

With a package the size of a video tape -- similar to Yamaha's QY10 and QY20 'walkstations' -- the MU5 offers 128 TG100-like sounds (plus eight drum kits), GM compatibility, 28-voice polyphony, 16-part multitimbrality, a computer interface for Mac or PC and battery (as well as mains) operation.
Testing the MU5 with a variety of MIDI Files produced pleasing results, and I marvel that Yamaha are able to produce such a big sound from such a small box.
The same goes for 58: Trombone and 59: Tuba (the upper range of both is identical), 73: Piccolo and 74: Flute, and 79: Whistle and 80: Ocarina.

The QY10 will also be really helpful in writing new stuff (whether or not you use it live), and is worth every cent for the pretty painless education it provides.
That MIDI signal, however, must be output from the QY10 to the GR30, and the *AUDIO* output of the GR30 recorded or monitored, to hear the sounds from your GR30.

Starting out with a Yamaha PSR60 home keyboard, he quickly upgraded to a Yamaha DX27 synth and a classic Dr. Rhythm drum machine which provided the basic setup for creating some very primitive tracks.
In the early 1990s after acquiring some more equipment he started his own musical project Retrofuture, writing tracks mainly influenced by early 80s electronica and the dance music of the time.
