Yamaha went all out on this press intro by securing Castillo Ranch in los Alamos, CA, which is one of the premier practice tracks for the Top Pro motorcycle racers, but it would be the first time that any ATV had ever been allowed at the facility.
I immediately felt comfortable on the YFZ450 and quickly began attempting some of the doubles and table tops on the track, and after only a few laps, I was launching the majority of the jumps with ease and felt in complete control.
After riding the new YFZ450 for one day with its eighty changes, Jason and I could tell that Yamaha did its homework, and we were both pleased to see that the changes could actually be felt when riding and they weren’t just hype on paper.

Yamaha engineers explained that the YFZ has a much larger contact patch to the ground than a single skinny bike tire and that a lower compression ratio was required for the engine — any more compression, and the engine would need race gas.
Yamaha engineers said the pivot point of the cast aluminum swingarm is positioned to reduce squatting under acceleration.

Put a pipe on the stock Suzuki and one on the stock Yamaha and there is no comparison, the Yamaha pulls way harder and is definitely faster.
I would love to be sponsored by Yamaha, and it would be really nice to have some kind of amateur contingency program, but it's a huge step that one of the big four even released a full on race quad like this.
Yamaha says they have done a lot of testing with it and they say they are confident that it will hold up just fine.

Each time the Yamaha YFZ 450 would just pull ahead slightly, we found that the Suzuki LTZ 400 has a lower rev limiter that came in at 8,000 RPMs where the Yamaha 450 topped out at 10,000 RPMs.
As for handling, again the Yamaha was just slightly better in most aspects, better quality shocks, improved front A-arms and a longer rear swingarm made the difference.
Bottom line, our test indicated that the Yamaha is a bit faster with acceleration, provides softer landings when jumping and may add a bit more control in high speed turns but two out of three of our test riders indicated that they still preferred the Suzuki for over all ride comfort and feel.

Yamaha has been delaying deliveries,, so I suspect they may have some early modifications coming.
LA Yamaha had them advertised in the trader for $6950 OTD when I wrote the reply.
In Yamaha's desperation to make their plant as light as the CRF they had to ditch 5th gear which unfortunately has driven many of us away from their product (at least on the MX-side of the house).
