A disadvantage of FM synthesis is that it is quite difficult to produce realistic sounding instruments, especially when playing high pitched notes (reeds, guitar, etc.).
The Adlib was the first soundcard that used this technique, using a Yamaha YM3812 FM chip with two operators.
The newer cards are mostly using the new Yamaha YMF262 (OPL-3) FM chip, which has four operators.

The good MIDI cards are becoming very hard to find now, but SB's are still everywhere.
Roland's competition was Yamaha's DB50XG/SW60XG, which sounded better in some circumstances, but the override is that things were written for and developed on MT-32/LAPC-Is and SCC-1s so take it to heart you'll be hearing it as they intended when run with those.
All the clones had no trouble slapping on a Yamaha chip to get FM going.

MIDIbox FM utilizies the Yamaha YMF262 sound chip (also known as OPL3) for generating the famous FM sounds known from Soundblaster (compatible) soundcards of the early 90s.
