Often mistaken for Japanese, the word is actually taken from the Lingala language, which is spoken in the two Congos.
The name also refers to the sport practiced in real life by these characters (who actually reside in the suburbs) and for whom the movie was intended as a vehicle for demonstrating their skills: resembling parkour, or "urban running", it involves athletic displays such as backflips and handstands while surmounting urban obstacles.
the philosophy of Yamakasi is that of complete freedom of movement from point A to point B as opposed to parkour which focuses on effiency of movement between point A to point B. The philosophy of the Yamakasi is known as l'art du deplacement.

They are an urban ninja group known as the "Yamakasi," a clan of seven modern day samurais who scale and climb buildings in order to get closer to the skies and be free.
Their discipline and ritual practices of the art of motion are hindered when a young boy, in an attempt to mimic his "Yamakasi" heroes, falls from a tree and gets badly injured from a poor heart.
Feeling responsible for the accident, the Yamakasi begins a Robin Hood like adventure where they start to steal from the rich in order to raise the large sum of money for the boy to receive his operation.

There are currently seven Yamakasi (though there are rumours they're in the process of training more up) and they range in age from 19 to 28.
Yamakasi The Movie portrays the gang as a bunch of modern day Robin Hoods - relieving the rich of their worldly burdens, giving it to the poor, and leaping off a lot of buildings in between.
Except for a single sequence when the seven scale the exterior of a giant skyscraper with the aid of digitally-erased cables, special effects are non-existent and the crew spent half their time with their fists in their mouths.

They have to guarantee a certain degree of return on their investments, and the best way for them to do that is to give people exactly what they’ve seen before in a slightly different package.
Yamakasi seems to have fallen victim to that kind of thinking: if it’s too different, too daring, no one will see it, so we have to cram in all the pseudo-obligatory stupid crap that has been poisoning movies for decades now.
