Legend says that Kansuke was blind in one eye and lame, but a fierce warrior nevertheless.

Yamamoto Kansuke was active between the eras of the daguerreotype and the disposable camera, specifically from 1931 to 1987.
Kansuke often exhibited these photos from the late 1950s on, under the bandwagon of "concrete" or "visual poetry." The word surrealism was passe to the VOU group from the mid-1930s.
Yamamoto Kansuke was influenced in style by Kitasono Katue and other VOU poets, both in the methods he used to achieve discontinuity and in the type of quasi-scientific vocabulary that was favored at the time as innovative.

 Battles of Kawanakajima - Wikipedia
Along with his gun-bugyō (army commissioner), Yamamoto Kansuke, a strategy was conceived.
Seeing that his plan had failed, Yamamoto Kansuke charged alone into the mass of Uesugi samurai, suffering upwards of 80 bullet wounds before retiring to a nearby hill and committing harakiri.
They succeeded in a pincer attack, accomplishing essentially what Yamamoto Kansuke had intended all along, and claimed victory over Uesugi Kenshin's forces.

Yamamoto quickly earns the trust of Takeda and all the other samurai under his control.
Yamamoto, utilizing his almost unearthly powers of persuasion, convinces the widow Princess Yu to accept this arrangement and to bear Takeda a son.
Yamamoto then proceeds to spend the next several years using treachery, military strategy, cunning political plans, and his own sheer force of will to advance the claim of Yu’s son as heir.

Although every aspect of a samurai’s life is important in understanding the totality of the world of the warrior, nothing is more fundamental than a knowledge of the beliefs and traditions that surround the moment the warrior takes leave of the physical world.
Junshi (following in death), is the second element in Yamamoto Tsunetomo’s exhortation to preparedness for death in Hagakure, when he insists on a willingness to perform seppuku on the death of one’s master.
Yamamoto Tsunetomo was particularly impressed with the example of Nitta Yoshisada and refers to his death twice in Hagakure.

Inagaki did not make the mistake of concentrating on either of the two warring lords but instead focused on Takeda's most celebrated general Kansuke Yamamoto (Toshiro Mifune), who was the brain behind the victories anyway.
Kansuke Yamamoto starts out as a ruthless and somewhat vicious ronin, who manages to get into Lord Takeda's (Kinnosuke Nakamura) service by, let's say, less than honorable means.
Yamamoto's ambition knows no bounds (or at least is bounded by the sea) for he plans to unify that portion of Japan under Takeda.

The first time Yamamoto sees her, she is preparing to commit suicide rather than suffer the disgrace of being made into her enemy’s concubine.
Yamamoto talks to her as a human being rather than a prisoner, and compels her to live on so that her family’s own bloodline will continue to exist in some form.
Yamamoto, on the other hand, is forced to try and balance his growing ambitions against his feelings for Yu, who only wants stability for herself and her future family, and fighting wars hardly seems the best way to accomplish that.
