The Yamana family had seen many defeats over the years, while the Hosokawa family was one of the three families which controlled the position of Kanrei, deputy to the Shogun.
Nevertheless, Yamana, not Hosokawa, was labeled a rebel, and enemy of the state.
Some of Yamana's followers deserted, joining Hosokawa's morally superior side, but many more switched sides as a result of the work of Hosokawa's emissaries to the provinces where Yamana and his allies drew their armies.

A dispute between Hosokawa Katsumoto and Yamana Souzen escalated into a nationwide war involving the Ashikaga shogunate and various daimyo.
Yamana Souzen, referred to as the "Red Monk" for his horrendous temper and his membership of the priesthood, decided to support the infant heir, Yoshihisa.
Both Yamana Souzen and Hosokawa Katsumoto died in 1473, and even then, the war continued on, neither side figuring out how to end the war.

Masanaga is most well known for his disputes in 1467 with Hatakeyama Yoshinari over the position of Kanrei.
This grew out of the larger conflict between Hosokawa Katsumoto and Yamana Souzen, which escalated into the Ōnin War.
Masanaga and Yoshinari were largely stalemated for much of this period, as Yamana and Hosokawa Katsumoto warned that the first to engage in battle within the capital would be declared a rebel.

The War of Onin was a major civil war lasting from 1467 to 1477.
Two daimyo, Hosokawa Katsumoto and Yamana Souzen began the fighting.
In 1477 an armistice was declared between the house Hosokawa and the house Yamana, but even though the war itself had ended the fighting between various daimyo continued.
