Battleships were the most heavily armed and armored gunships afloat, although they were made obsolete by the aircraft carrier.
Battleships built in the late 19th century usually had four or so big guns (around 12 inches in diameter), and an assortment of smaller guns.
A battleship's big guns might have a range of 20 miles, but the aircraft carrier had aircraft with ranges of hundreds of miles, and radar was making those attacks ever more effective.

 Japanese Battleships
The Fuso class battleships were characterized by their tall superstructures.  Although they were more heavily armed and faster than most foreign battleships of the time, they lacked much in armor.  These ships were already out dated by World War II and were easily sunk by US naval Forces.
The Nagato class of battleships not only was the first Japanese battleships to sport the 16” guns, but also the first in the world to have them.  She was also faster and bettered armored than most her counterparts of the day.
The fourth Yamato class of battleship was laid 7 November 1940.  However, it was cancelled in 1942 and scrapped in 1943.

The first warships resembling modern battleships were built in Britain around 1870 with the Devastation class of low-freeboard turret ships, a few years after the first battle between ironclad warships (the USS Monitor and CSS Virginia at Hampton Roads, Virginia).
The 12" mains and 8" intermediates were generally used for battleship to battleship combat, while the secondaries (typically 7" to 5") were reserved for smaller threats, cruisers and the new destroyers.
The word "battleship" originated with the development of the line-of-battle tactic, in which ships usually followed each other single-file and engaged the enemy ships to one side, in the mid 17th century.

The earliest version of Plan No. A-140 ("A" indicating "battleship" and "140" indicating that this was the 140th warship designed by the IJN) was completed in March 1935, showing a ship 294 m long at the waterline with a 41.2 m beam, a 10.4 m draught, and a trial displacement of 69,500 British tons.
Yamato was launched on 8 August 1940 and commissioned on 16 December 1941.

Final outcome was that the Yamato would end up a burning hulk and slowly finished off by torpedos from US DDs, one Iowa heading to the yard with extensive topside damage, and the IJN secondary untis driven away by fires shifted from second Iowa combined with each side losing a few DDs.

The Thunderer was chosen as the first ship of the Yamato class to be refitted.
