		Nara, Japan -- "Buddha Boogers," a candy inspired by the giant statue at Todaiji temple in Nara had its registered trademark revoked by the Patent Office following the temple's claim that the name is insulting, The Yomiuri Shimbun learned Thursday.
		The candy, which has been manufactured by a firm in Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture, for the last three years, is nevertheless still being sold at souvenir shops.
		According to a statement from the temple, the statue is an object of worship and the candy's name disgraces the image of Nara, so the firm should stop selling the product as a matter of conscience.

		Heijo Palace (平城京;) in Nara, was the Imperial Palace of Japan during the Nara Period (710-784 CE).
		After the capital was moved from Fujiwara-kyo to Heijo-kyo (Nara) in CE 707, there was much discussion as to where to build the new Imperial Palace.
		The city, and the palace grounds, was based largely on Chang'an, the capital of China during the T'ang Dynasty, which was contemporary to the time when Nara was capital of Japan.

		NARA -- One of Japan's most famous Buddhist temples is up in arms over a company's sale of sweets it calls "Great Buddha Boogers," the Mainichi has learned.
		Buddhist priests at Todaiji Temple in the ancient capital of Nara got snotty over the sweets, which come in a package featuring a picture of Buddha picking his nose.
		They successfully stopped a Nara Prefecture company from continuing to use the controversial title as a trademark by successfully arguing that it offended believers.

	Chlorinated compunds contaminated Japanese groundwater
		Dichloromethane was found in groundwater on the premises of a Sharp factory in Yamatokoriyama, Nara Prefecture, in concentrations 7,000 times above allowable levels, prefectural officials said.
		They said trichloroethylene, which is used as a cleaning agent for manufactured goods, was detected at 3.7 times over the allowed concentration at a Sharp plant in Tenri, also in Nara Prefecture.
		Other chemicals were also detected at the Yao plant, the officials said, in particular, cis-1, 2-dichloroethylene at a concentration 670 times allowable levels.

		Yamatokoriyama City's Board of Education and the Gangoji Institute for Research of Cultural Property have announced the discovery of the grid system of streets modeled on such streets in China in the southern end of Kujo Street thus far considered to be outside of the Heijo Palace (710-784).
		Since the Edo period when attempts to restore the Heijo Palace were carried out, nobody has noticed the existence of the grid system of streets there.
		The Kyoto Chamber of Commerce and Industry has announced guidelines for applications to the Kyoto Tourist and Culture Certification Test to recognize the knowledge about Kyoto's history, culture, nature and living, and said the first grade will be newly created.
