Yamdena is one of over 13,000 islands in the Indonesian archipelago.
Direct appeal by concerned citizens in countries around the world, on Yamdena's behalf, is perhaps the best way now to let the Indonesian government know that the eyes of the world are upon it.
Acting in solidarity with the islanders, we can urge the Minister of Forestry to cancel logging concessions on Yamdena island; to recognize the traditional land rights of the island people; and to ensure for the local people equitable benefits and a voice in the decisions regarding their natural resources.

DTE 42 / August 99:   (Site not responding. Last check: 2007-10-20)
The indigenous people of Yamdena Island in the Tanimbars, Maluku, have resumed protests against the destruction of their forests after the government withdrew from an agreement to halt commercial logging on the island.
The 164,000-hectare logging concession on Yamdena is held by a joint venture, between logging company, PT Mohtra Agung, and state-owned PT Inhutani I. Local people, national and international organisations have campaigned against commercial logging on Yamdena for many years, to safeguard the livelihoods of the island's indigenous communities and protect its unique fauna and flora.
For the people of Yamdena, and for the many other indigenous communities struggling to defend their forest resources, these words have yet to be translated into deeds.

Yamdena's indigenous population of 83,000, have nothing to gain from the logging, but face the destruction of their traditional livelihoods and the erosion of their culture.
Yamdena is also home to a number of unique fauna species including cockatoos and a type of wild buffalo.
Actions speak louder than words, however, and the case of Yamdena illustrates how Indonesia's commitment to maintaining biodiversity falters when it comes up against the interests of the loggers and their friends in the government.

In addition, although most of the primary lowland forest is of the moist evergreen type, displaying little seasonality, in places (most prominently, the west part of Yamdena and south Aru) we find semi-dry monsoon and savanna forest [SKEPHI, 1992: 23; van Steenis, 1958], and patches of semi-evergreen forest on other islands (especially Halmahera and Seram).

However, habitat loss continues apace in the south of Yamdena and this, combined with continuing trapping, may cause it to decline in the future.
