The novel has been brought to the screen by Luo Yan, a well known film star in China, now a resident of the United States.
Luo Yan, looking to break through to mainstream American audiences, has the film spoken in English, with occasional obvious dubbing, which may explain some of the awkwardness of the performances.
Luo Yan herself is an accomplished actress and radiates star quality, but she cannot save her own film as it unfortunately descends into laughably formulaic melodrama, accompanied by a score of crashing chords and celestial voices, drowned out only by the very loud (internal) ringing of the cliche bell repeatedly tolling its ominous judgement.

Set against the background of WW2, the center of this mess is the jeez-we-really-don’t-like-modernization Wu family and a forbidden romance between Madame Wu (Luo Yan) and an American priest (Willem Dafoe).
So by the time Dafoe swoops up Yan ("Oh, I think I sprained my ankle.") and tosses her onto a bed of straw in a barn the audience is giggling and you’re left to wonder: just who invited this creepy looking priest to take care of the orphans anyway?
