Buncombe County is a county located in the state of North Carolina.
In 1833 parts of Burke County and Buncombe County were combined to form Yancey County, and in 1838 the southern part of what was left of Buncombe County became Henderson County.
In the county the population is spread out with 21.90% under the age of 18, 8.60% from 18 to 24, 29.30% from 25 to 44, 24.80% from 45 to 64, and 15.40% who are 65 years of age or older.

Established in 1833, Yancey County was named for a distinguished statesman, Bartlett Yancey, who served in the U.S. Congress from 1813 to 1817.
The McElroy House, which is now the Rush Wray Museum of Yancey County History, was built around 1840 and served as the headquarters for the Home Guard for much of western North Carolina during the Civil War.
Nearby stands a two-story concrete structure which served as the county courthouse when it was built in 1908 and now serves as a renovated town hall and police department.

OBSERVED: In early spring 1988, some friends of mine and I were traveling up the road to the top of Mt. Mitchell in a four-wheel drive vehicle.
At one point, the animal had stepped over a fallen branch approximately three feet off the ground without breaking stride.
I know sometimes big cats can leave footprints that appear to be two-legged, and there are still some panthers (mountain lions) left in the mountains of North Carolina, but if a cat made these marks it would have to have been the biggest panther in the world.
