He is first mentioned in The Record of the Buddhist Monasteries of Lo-yang, a 547 Chinese text by Yang Xuanzhi which describes the great eminence of the Luoyang's religious works.
Yang mentions Bodhidharma twice in passing, identifying him as a Central Asian monk whom he met at the monastery of Yung-ning.
Seeing the golden disks at the top of the monastery's stupa reflecting in the sun, the rays of light illuminating the surface of the clouds, the jewel-bells on the stupa blowing in the wind, the echoes reverberating beyond the heavens, Bodhidharma sang its praises.

Yang Xuanzhi, the author of this memoir was an official of the Tuoba Wei, who knew the city in times of both prosperity and decline.
In 547, three years after the fall of the capital, Yang visited the ruined city and was moved to write this record of its heyday.
As an official, Yang had access to official and private archives and may also have witnessed some of the events he describes.

The term writer can apply to anyone who creates a written work, but the word more usually designates those who write creatively or professionally, or those who have written in many different forms.
The Northern Wei Dynasty (北魏 386-534) is most noted for the unification of northern China in 440, it was also heavily involved in funding the arts and many antiques and art works from this period have survived.
