YANGMINGSHAN, Taiwan - One of the worst things about Taipei is that the crowded capital sits in a valley that seems to work like a soup pot, holding in a toxic stew of exhaust fumes from thousands of honking cars and scooters zooming around the metropolis.
The trail head is on the mountain's southwest side, about a 20-minute walk from the Yangmingshan bus station, where mountain farmers squat beside the road and sell cabbages the size of volleyballs and turnips still caked with dried dirt.

 TIMEasia.com: Travel -- Detour
Yangmingshan is not as wild or dramatic as Taiwan's other mountain getaways, but it has two great advantages: no mountain permit from the government is required to climb in the national park, and it is right on Taipei's doorstep.
The national park is riddled with a complex network of hiking trails that can confuse even native readers of Chinese.
That means a day hike in the park can end with a hot dinner and a cold drink in the leafy suburb of Tienmu, rather than in a windswept tent at 3,000 m.

Tourists swarm Yangmingshan as butterfly season opens
In Taiwan, the flowers grow largely on Tatun Mountain, which is located inside the Yangmingshan National Park, and are rarely seen anywhere but the island's northern areas.
In the past, locals used to call the first appearance of the two species the opening of "the season of Parantica sita niphonica," although they likely used the common name for the species, which in English is "chestnut tiger." Large groups of these two butterflies have been seen flitting about Yangmingshan park since April.
On weekends, residents of metropolitan Taipei like to escape the urban jungle and head en masse for the hills of nearby Yangming mountain to climb the steps hewn in the trails leading to the top of this hilly area, which is preserved as a national park.
