Yangon was founded as Dagon in the 500s by the Mon, who had dominated the lower portions of present-day Myanmar at the time.

Taxis are the easiest form of transport and there are thousands of them, they are cheap and range from wrecks to very clean and reliable, local people use them frequently, as vehicles are very expensive and beyond the budget of all but the very few.
On my visit to Yangon, there appeared to be little political tension in the region, taxi drivers and local people spoke freely about the problems of Myanmar and often of their support for the great champion of democracy Aung San Suu Kyi.
