The Yangtze River or Chang Jiang is the longest river in Asia and the third longest in the world after the Nile in Africa and the Amazon in South America.

The Yangtze Service Medal was authorized in April 1930 for award to Navy and Marine Corps personnel who served in China as part of the Yangtze River Patrol between September 3, 1926 and October 21, 1927 or March 1, 1930 and December 31, 1932.
A campaign medal was designed for each Theater, and participation in designated battles or campaigns was designated by the use of small campaign stars (rather than bars as was the case for the WW I Victory Medal) affixed to the medal and service ribbons.

The medal will be awarded to individual who shall have been attached to, present, and serving on permanent duty with an organization of the naval service of the United States credited by the Secretary of the Navy with having participated in operations in China.
Service in a passenger status, or as an observer, visitor, courier, escort, inspector or other similar status when not permanently attached to an eligible unit, is not creditable toward eligibility for the above medal.

This was awarded for service during the "Amethyst Incident" in which a British Destroyer, the HMS Amethyst, was trapped for a period in the Yangtze by Communist troops as they were on the verge of winning the Civil War.
It originally covered service during the 1937 Japanese invasion through 1939, but was extended to cover relevant service through the end of WWII, and was also awarded for Cold War Service along the China coast through the late 50's.

Each branch of service has an official Order of Precendence which dictates in what order the ribbons and medals will be placed.
Therefore, a WWII uniform would be correct to show a ribbon bar with a commendation medal ribbon first and a purple heart second, while a Vietnam era uniform would have them reversed.
The Yangtze Service Medal was last awarded for service in 1932 and so would not be represented on these sites.
