Found only in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangzi, a habitat 1600 kilometers long, baiji have inspired poets, served as harbingers of rough weather for fishermen, and perplexed or eluded research scientists.
Once considered by fishermen as a protective goddess of the Yangzi and cherished in ancient myths as a galloping white horse capable of flying across lakes and rivers carrying divinities on its back, there now may be fewer than fifty baiji left in existence.
Studies of a captive breeding population of finless river porpoises (a less endangered Yangzi River cetacean, which also lives in the ocean) which had been in the reserve since 1990, suggested that the oxbow could sustain a captive population of perhaps fifty baiji.

This paper examines how elite associations developed within the context of Lower Yangzi towns during the era of the 1911 Revolution, and how their activities influenced the revolutionary movement and deeper social transformation at the township level.
Thus, the Republican Revolution in these Lower Yangzi towns was not only a natural result but also a component part of the broad social transformation led by elite associations.

Professor Childs-Johnson, who specializes in Yangzi River archaeology, believes that the piece, sold during the March 1998 International Asian Art Fair, is one of only three fully intact, bronze spirit trees (also known by the more popular variation, "money tree") documented by archaeologists.
Archaeologists are now in a race against time to protect the wealth of artifacts in the area not only from inundation by the dam's 400-mile long reservoir, but also from the increasingly bold and well-organized looters and smuggling rings operating in the area.
Excavated relics from these sites on the Yangzi are critical in reconstructing the little understood picture of South China's contribution to Chinese civilization.
