It was run by "Yankee Bill" Lewis, a New Yorker who came here in 1836.
His establishment, located on the main road from Grand Rapids to Battle Creek and Kalamazoo, was an unimposing collection of log cabins, but the fame of his hospitality was such that as many as one hundred people often stayed at the tavern for a night.
After Lewis' death in 1853 new roads bypassed Yankee Springs.

This cemetery is about one mile southwest of Yankee Springs on Duffy Rd, just behind the Yankee Springs church, north of Shaw Lake and west of Co. Rd 611.
The cemetery and area was named after William Lewis known as "Yankee Bill" after he donated the land as a burying ground to the town.
It is now owned and maintained by the township.
