Struck by the Ree, who would become a principal chief of the Yankton Sioux, was born in August 1804, the same week that Lewis and Clark passed through his village.
Born in 1876 on a Pine Ridge Reservation in South Dakota and known as Zitkala-Sa, which means Red Bird, she was raised in a tipi on the Missouri River until she was 12 when she went to a Quaker missionary school for Indians--White's Manual Institute--in Wabash, Indiana.
During the War of 1812, when the British were putting pressure on the Sioux to join the British side, War Eagle remained loyal to the Americans and influenced the Indian tribes in the area to remain neutral.
