Yanomamo kin terms conform to the Iroquois classificatory pattern, which is consistent with other features of their social structure, including an emphasis on unilineal (patrilineal) descent and bilateral cross cousin marriage.
The distinction between different kinds of cousins reflects this division between descent lines but also marks a second important difference: parallel cousins, like brothers and sisters, are prohibited from marrying; cross cousins are not and may very often be chosen as preferential marriage partners within a cross cousin marriage system.

For example, we are not told that the Yanomamo have for decades now been willingly seeking and embracing different methods of conflict resolution - rather than killing each other, resolving issues like who "owns" a woman by negotiation rather than by killing those who disagree with you.
Many of these constructive and helpful developments, which the yanomamo have embraced of their own free choice (having had a gut-full of the alternative) were introduced by well-meaning missionaries, and yet it seems the anthropologists want the yanomamo to stay frozen in time and keep killing each other.

For all of us who collaborated with and learned from Roche in the 1950s and 1960s, it is offensive to read descriptions that imply he was a poorly trained or careless local doctor (he received his medical degree at The Johns Hopkins University and pursued medical research as a Fellow at Harvard Medical School).
Tierney argues that a deadly outbreak of measles in the Yanomamo in 1968 originated with the Edmonston B vaccine, which was administered by Roche and others according to a protocol designed by James Neel.
It was the only weapon available to Roche in the field to fight the epidemic outbreak of the disease (live vaccines, which are prepared with attenuated pathogens, cannot produce a transmissible disease, although they are able to induce defenses against it).

Previously, Tierney claimed that in 1968 a group of researchers led by the University of Michigan's James Neel and including the renowned anthropologist Napoleon Chagnon had gone into the jungle with the purpose of infecting the Yanomamo with the deadly measles virus in order to test their social-Darwinist ideas.
Tierney's shocking claim rests on the fact that the scientists carried with them a live-virus measles vaccine known as Edmonston B. Tierney says the vaccine didn't inoculate the Yanomamo, an immune-depressed population, but instead caused a measles outbreak that killed hundreds or thousands of people.
Tierney's whole theory of this particular measles outbreak among the Yanomamo rests on the notion that it happened there, in the remote rainforest, for apparently the first time in recorded history.

Still, Yanomamo is far more than an ethnographic thriller depicting a tribal people in southern Venezuela.
Chagnon describes in detail the Yanomamos' seemingly exotic practices--the rule that a tribesman should marry his classificatory cross-cousin, or the abduction of women that invariably sparks a war, or a chest-pounding duel at any feast that might prevent an all-out battle from breaking out amid the festivities.
