Yao Zongxun was the student of the well-known Beijing martial artist Hong Lianshun, until Hong had a match with Wang Xiangzhai when Yao was only nineteen.
Yao had uncommon stamina and spirit, after overcoming hard training with his Master Wang Xiangzhai, he eventually began to replace Wang Xiangzhai for challenges taking place in Beijing: contributing to propagate the legend of undefeatable Da Cheng Quan.
At age of 8 they started learning yiquan from their father Yao Zongxun, and continued it even in the hard time of Cultural Revolution (1966-1976), when whole family had to leave Beijing and work in the country.

Yao's basic postures are very similar to the one's I was taught, although they are presented in a different order.
The book written by Yao Zongxun you mentioned, there were some photographs of him and his son illustrating sanda and their postures show the elbows pointing outwards.
I had stayed and trained at Cui Ruibin's school for 1 1/2 day ( student of Yao Zongxun) and though I think he is quite impressive looking also found the tuition fee too expensive ( I am still a university student).

There's a nice article on this YiQuan site written by Cui Fushan, reminiscing about his time training with YiQuan expert Yao Zongxun, who was then in his 60s.
The second part of Yao's explanation is also interesting.
Imagine for a moment that he was raising his eye's to the heavens and laughing at the poor student when he said that you must 'think a lot'.

As with any great master, after their death there is always dispute about who was their best student, who was the inheritor of the style, etc. There is no exception in Wang Xiangzhai's case and there are several people who stake their claim to have been the best student.
Yao Zongxun has probably better claim than most, having been designated, by Wang Xiangzhai, as his successor.
There is a possibility that he may come to UK one day to do a Dachengquan seminar.

I distinctly remember the discussion of the picture of Wang Xiangzhai, where he was demonstrating the secret posture of leaning slightly to the side.
Also, we had Yao Zongxun represented as a midget by some new fangled photographic trickery; and we were only able to sort out the confusion using instruments capable of measuring angle.
The truth is that photographs can only inform you according to your ability to understand from your own experience.
