		It was crated, along with its sister ship, the Yapura, in pieces and was shipped in 1862 to Arica - then a Peruvian port before Chile took control of the city in the 1879-83 War of the Pacific.
		Originally, the Yavari and Yapura were going to be gunboats, as well as cargo and passenger ships, to establish Peru's sovereignty in the waters.
		The Yapura was converted by the Peruvian navy into a floating hospital that still serves lakeside communities.

		This problem was solved by jumbo-izing the ships (Was this the first time this job was done), and they operated successfully until 1914 when then engines were changed for hot bulb diesels.
		The Yapura is still in service as a hospital ship, visiting the indigenous people who live on the side of the lake and the Yavari is being restored by a group of enthusiasts.

		Spix was to travel the upper Solimões as far as the border with Peru and Martius the Yapura up to the Arara-Coara falls near the border with the vice-royalty of New Granada.
		Spix returned to Ega at the beginning of February 1820 having got as far as Tabatinga on the Peruvian border.
		As Martius had not yet returned from his Yapura journey, Spix decided to spend some time exploring the Rio Negro before travelling on to Barra de Rio Negro (now Manaus) at the end of February.
