  History of Yarm
Low Worsall, on the River Tees near Yarm to the east of Middleton St. George, was situated at the highest tidal point on the River Tees until the recent construction of the Tees Barrage at Stockton.
Yarm's location within a tight bend of the River Tees resembles the situation of the City of Durham and the town of Warkworth in Northumberland.
Yarm is connected to the village of Egglescliffe on the north bank of the Tees by a stone bridge built by Walter Skirlaw, Bishop of Durham in 1400.

The market town of Yarm is situated within a northward pointing horseshoe meander of the River Tees approximately 8 kilometres upstream of Stockton on Tees in the north-east of England.
Yarm is recorded in the Domesday Book as ‘Gerou’ meaning fish weir and this probably indicates a relatively small and poor settlement.
In the medieval period Yarm was an important trading centre with its markets and fairs and as a port exporting agricultural produce and lead to the Low Countries.

Yarm is a parish and market-town in the western division of the liberty of Langbaurgh, in the North Riding of Yorkshire : the town occupies a low peninsula nearly surrounded by the river Tees, about 237 miles from London, and 44 miles north-north-west from York.
The town appears to have fallen in importance with the rise of Stockton, which is about 4 miles to the north-east, on the opposite side of the river, and partly, perhaps, in consequence of the destructive floods to which its low situation subjects it.
