The Yarra River is a river in southern Victoria (Australia); it is the river on which the city of Melbourne was founded.
It was given the name Yarra Yarra in 1835 by John Helder Wedge of the Port Phillip Association, in the mistaken belief that this was the aborginal name for the river.
The river's source is a series of swamps in the upper reaches of the Yarra Ranges National Park, directly to the east of the Baw Baw plateau a thickly forested subalpine park, which are entirely closed-off to all except the employees of Melbourne Water.

To those of us who live along the Yarra, whether in busy cosmopolitan Melbourne or in some quiet retreat high in the hills near the source, the Yarra is our river, and just what that means could be expressed in a thousand—ten thousand—a million—ways.
We began at the wide, calm, expanse where the Yarra empties into Port Phillip Bay and trekked past South Bank and the Botanic Gardens, through some of the oldest parts of the city and into the outskirts, until we were in the quiet of the hills.
Feelings about the Yarra are much more diverse than our famous "multi-culture", for each of us—every single individual person—is affected by the Yarra in a unique way.The quilt, then, was an opportunity for individuals to try to show the Yarra to the world through their very personal eyes.

The river was "Birrarung" - "River of mists and shadows" to the the original inhabitants - the Wurundjeri people.
The name "Yarra" is attributed to surveyor John Wedge, who on his 1835 exploration, asked local aborigines what they called the cascading waters on the lower section of the river.
That's because the city grew from the banks of the Yarra and even today the focus for the city is still very much on a one-kilometre section of the river.
