The area around Port Phillip and the Yarra valley, on which the city of Melbourne now stands, was the home of the Kulin nation, an alliance of several language groups of Indigenous Australians, whose ancestors had lived in the area for approximately 30,000 years.
The spot was on the north bank of the Yarra, roughly between the present Spencer St Bridge and the Kings Bridge.
From September 1836 it was the administrative centre of the Port Phillip District of New South Wales.
